Fresh off of the digicam, here are the first post-emergency pics of Nimbus. I apologize for him looking a little scruffy. I can't have him on his back for long - can't put that kind of pressure on his lungs - so pics are quick and brushings aren't happening for now. Yes his eyes are a little icky too but that's just because he cried so much at the vet and right after he got home. Curzon has it too but to a lesser degree since I kept wiping his eyes when he was crying while Nimbus was at the vet. He is doing tremendously well, and upset at me for taking a picture of his partially-shaved underside (you'll understand why in a minute MOL). His numbers went crashing this morning but I gave him some of the store Purina instead of his Prescription Purina and that boosted him up 30 points or so while I was off working. Now that might not sound like a lot - even though it kinda is - but considering he was in the TWENTIES this morning, 30 points is a life-saver in itself. It's my fault though. I had no idea he wasn't going to eat all night, so yesterday's shot, albeit a smaller one, was still too much. If he's at this level in a couple hours when I give him his 4pm poke he's not getting one this afternoon either. His diabetes tried to warn me, and I was half-right. I knew he was sick in da chest at least a month ago. But he wasn't showing respiratory distress so I figured it was another URI and asked for more AB's. You all have no idea how bad I feel now. But he made it, and that's what counts. He's laying in the remnants of the sunspot right now, not budging an inch even though BOTH twins are hissing at him. And I think I might have forgotten to tell you all something pretty dang important (and Chloe and all others with issues like Nimbus take note). Nimbus peed in the carrier when I was scrambling yesterday morning, and so I let him out (obviously - he went to the vet and back home wrapped in a blanket). I was smart and grabbed a glass and my little baby liquid medicine thingie and saved that pee. Thank goodness I did too. The vet found a LOT of crystals in his pee, and the diet food isn't meant to prevent that, and the diabetic is a case of it might help but it's not designed for it. So not only is he on the diuretic and the heart medicine, as soon as it gets in, he's going on urine acidifiers too (because we can't just switch his food because of the diabetes). He's a very, VERY sick cat. But he's a big fighter too, and he has no intention on going anywhere yet, even though he's used up at least 3 of his lives (this, the diabetes/URI diagnosis 2 years ago, and the blockage/HCM diagnosis in 2006) and no guessing how many of MINE! OH MY... *sigh* A lot of you have also been asking how I'm holding up. I'm doing better, but I'm still internally shaken, as to be expected. I did sleep a little better last night but not the sound sleep I need. It doesn't help any I've been having to hiss like a cat (and trust me I'm VERY good at it) defending my BooCat from the volley of hisses coming his way from the twins. Honestly though, he really doesn't care. He isn't budging, but he doesn't have the strength or energy yet to fight back. I can't wait to see that because, knowing him, hell will reign down on both of them! And no, that doesn't count against his GKC creds, as defense of one's pride, body and life is totally permitted, even if delayed by illness or disability. Retribution for said offenses against oneself is also permitted when the crime was committed when victim is incapable of fighting back. The twins should know this... and know he might be the most gentle cat ever, but he's also one of the most brutal when he's pushed too far. Anyway, without any further ado, here are the wonderful first pictures of my baby boy (even tho he not so little anymore)!
For what he's been through he's looking pretty good. He's back to enjoying the scritchies... Oh and one last thing... I met my first polydactyl cat face-to-face! I know so many here, but never one face to face! He's just a 4 year old, rescued by the Cat Angels and adopted by one of the people I know at work. I didn't know that polys could be rear-pawed as well as front-pawed! He's still a bundle of energy! I'll show you a pic soon enough. He's another one of those cats that the twins are going to get upset with me cheating on them with because he's just a joy!

Awwww - Poor Nimbus. He actually looks petty good in the pictures. Yes, he looks like he isn't feeling 100%, but he looks pretty darn good considering all he's been through. You do such a great job of taking care of the furbabies. Don't beat yourself up for not catching things sooner. Anyone who knows cats knows it isn't always easy to guess when they are really realy sick HUGs toyou. hope you can get some sleep tonight.

Oh it is so good that Nimbus is doing better - I know being at home has to help that a lot. It is good that he is such a fighter. And of course it won't count against his GKC cred to give the two NKC members a bit of schooling!
And yep, polys can be front and back toed (with so much going on you many not know but we just adopted a newbie who is a poly - she has been with us since the 19th). She is poly front and back - 5 each on the back, 7 on the front (or 6 plus the dew claw technically but it really looks like 7 since the dew claw is usually tucked up and back).
We are still sending over tons of get well purrs and prayers for Nimbus to get well quickly - and we have a feeling that with teh other two hissing it might actually give him some incentive to heal up extra quick so he can show them whats what!

Oh he's just giving them the cold shoulder right now, like he usually does.
Cod knows he won't for long though... Usually one thwap is enough. Mom
hisses a lot at him anyways. Just so odd to hear Curzon hissing at the boy!
I did see about your newb... congrats!

Beautiful Nimbus, we are still purring hard for you. You are a big brave mancat and we love you. Tell your Mum to get some rest if she can.

forgive me as I am late to this party and I am not fully versed in all of Nimbus' issues. But because of this post I see he has diabetes (and it looks like you home test) and he has urinary crystals (I'm assuming struvite)
I have experience in both of these things. I treated my own cat Emerald for diabetes for seven years before she died of cancer. I also have two boys that produce crystals in their urine when they get too many carbohydrates/ plant based ingredients in their diet. Both are dramatically improved by choosing a diet that is low in carbs/plant based ingredients. I see you are feeding purina food - I'm assuming DM. (lot of assumptions on my part, I know) There are other options out there that are lower carbs.
When Em was first diagnosed, she ate dry food, and needed seven units of insulin twice a day. When I got her on a low carb canned food (I used fancy feast turkey and giblets pate formula) her insulin need went down to 1-2 units. I got her on a raw diet with no carbs and for the short time she was on it she needed no insulin. She was old and after a few weeks she refused to eat raw any more, and I prefered her to be happy eating what she would and I would deal with the glucose levels.
The raw I fed was home made. I used the recipe at http://www.catinfo.org I'm now feeding commercial but I'm planning on getting back to making at least some of their food. the website is run by a vet who studies feline nutrition, and she has a lot of info on urinary issues and diabetes on the site.
I'm sure you do not want to make any changes, especially with his food when he is not feeling well, but I felt compelled to share my story. I hope you don't mind.
